Basic list of some visual and privacy centric extensions
Browser Extensions
by: jb-williams
Just a little list of browser extensions I fluctuate between using some to all.
All in the hope that at least one person stumbles across it and takes even a little step towards better online security and better visual experience.
All of these should be available in most popular browsers(ex:Google-Chrome,Chromium,Mozilla FireFox,Brave,LibreWolf).
DarkMode Theming
- Dark Reader:
- A browser extention that is very popular and makes all websites that you go to render in a “Dark Mode” setting.
- You can change several different
brightness
related settings, as well as, the dark coloring. - Simple to turn
on
/off
as needed.
Most of the rest are privacy focused extensions that I tend to use
- Ublock Origin:
- It’s fairly popular, “wide-spectrum content blocker”, including ad blocking.
- Touts CPU and memory efficiency as a primary feature.
- Privacy Badger:
- Another popular tracking and ad blocker.
- Decentraleyes:
- An extention that limits/blocks tracking from thirdparty content calls from websites.
- It acts like a Content Delivery Network, but attempts to load local sources before continueing to try to inject the local resource first.
I switch between either using DuckDuckGo or StartPage as my search engine but have both added
-
DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials:
- WARNGING Changes your default search engine from Google to DuckDuckGo. I like not getting paid Google search results first.
- Blocks many privacy intrusive trackers, fingerprinting, etc.
- Automatically enforces Encryptions (HTTPS)
-
- WARNGING Changes your default search engine from Google to Startpage. I like not getting paid Google search results first.
- Does many of the same things as the DuckDuckGo extension, but
Defense in Depth
is a strong concept in the security world, so having both doesn’t seem to be an issue:
